International Museum Day
(IMD) was first celebrated in 1977 and has become a huge international event for the international museum community. Participating museums are planning creative events and activities related to this year’s theme: Museums for a sustainable society.
IMD aims to show that “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” In 2014, more than 35,000 museums participated in the event in over 140 countries.
Museums all over Spain will open their doors for free, offering guided tours and displaying art works which are not usually shown to the public. Lots of museums will be organising games for children, works of theatre, cinema, workshops and more…
In addition, on 16 May, many museums will be preparing for Museums at Night, opening their doors later than usual for an evening full of special events and activities.
Ask for details at your local museum to find out what they will be doing for this special day...and night!
